Methods of Evocation

In "The Book of Revelation" Satan appears in the form of a monstrous seven-headed dragon who is an arch-nemesis to God before being cast into a pit of flame. Though this book of The Bible is seen as mostly figurative, he appears in supposedly non-figurative texts as well. According to The Grand Grimoire, Lucifer (a name often used synonymously with the devil) is the Emperor of Hell. No definitive way to summon Satan has been discovered, though versions of his sigil exist and his demonic enn is Tasa reme laris Satan – Ave Satanas and his "mark" is 666.

Many iterations and interpretations of his role exist. In the Hebrew Bible, he is referred to as ha-satan, or "the adversary", and is seen as someone who works for the heavenly court and brings human's sins to light. This version of Satan may not actually be a demon, but rather more of a lawyerly character who corrects the moral mistakes of men and God. Some also speculate that Satan's place in The Bible was a metaphor for Emperor Nero; based on the theory the number 666 was actually a code that spells out "Nero Caesar", rather than him being an actual entity. The commonly used name Lucifer is most likely in reference to the morning star Venus, thus making it unlikely he was a cast-out angel.

Another comparison can be made to Daniel's dreams in Daniel 7. In which four beasts rise out of the sea, each representing a kingdom that martyred the Jewish people. However, in rejecting God's values, these four kings would fall and the Jewish people would create a new Zion where they could rule once again (which was described in excruciating detail in the revelation to John). Satan represents the "king" of Rome. However, the fact that there are only three beasts suggests that the fourth beast came after revelation or has not yet happened. The New Jerusalem described in Revelation 21:15-21 is a 12,000 stadia by 12,000 stadia cube (1,400 miles x 1,400 miles). This would make the city taller than the distance of the International Space Station by about 1,146 miles; this would also make it about half the size of the United States, starting in Delaware and ending in Colorado.

In the 15th century grimoire, the Book of Office Spirits, he is said to have been previously in the ranks of Cherubim, and that he believes after 1,200 he will return to the ranks of heaven to reclaim his place. It was also stated he granted lordship of the cardinal directions and power over the seas, land, and trees to Orience, Paimon, Amaymon, and Egine. While Lucifer, who is listed as a separate entity, is the true ruler of hell who may not be summoned.
