Methods of Evocation

Baron Samedi, also referred to as Bawon Samedi, Bawon Samdi or Baron Saturday (the direct translation of his name from Haitian Creole), is the head Iwa of the dead in the Haitian Vodou religion. Personality-wise, he is described as having a voracious appetite both culinarily and sexually, and he often indulges in crass, comical activities. When he appears, he will most likely be dressed in a combination of black, purple, and white while wielding his signature skull-handle cane and top hat. He is referenced to frequently in popular culture, such as the character Baron Saturday in the influential 60's rock opera S.F. Sorrow and appearing by the same name in the American dark fantasy series Supernatural.

He often appears in multiple forms or "personas" such as Baron Cimetière, his graveyard self who stops corpses from becoming zombies, and Baron La Croix, who guides humans at the crossroads of life and death; however, Papa Ghede sometimes takes this role. Papa Ghede is one side of the whole of Baron Samedi who represents the afterlife side, while Samedi represents the death side of this whole. Using his Vèvè (which requires an extremely specialized individual to do, such as a oungan or manbo) you can direct his spiritual energy down to the physical realm. However, it's also important to provide offerings of rum, cigars, black coffee, vodka, cigarettes, black goats or black chickens (he'd most likely enjoy an Ayam Cemani the most). You can also try including the symbols of a black cross, a coffin, or skulls in the ritual.

The origins of the Vodou religion stem from Africa, though gained popularity in Haiti through the slave trade at the time. Originally, Vodou only contained lwa (also called loa) which often took a darker role in Haitian Vodou versus traditional Vodou; however, the Christianization of the religion led to the ultimate creator Bondye (god) being added as a divine force. There are forty-four main lwa, though there are over one thousand in total.
