Pazuzu was the ancient Mesopotamian king of demons, the bearer of drought, and the bringer of strong winds; though when he is called upon he takes up the mantle of a protector against evil spirits. For example, he was often called upon to stop Lamashtu, the bird-headed goddess of demons and daughter of the sky god, from killing women during childbirth and bringing nightmares, among other things. Pazuzu's dominant power is therefore exorcising demons from an area. Demons in Mesopotamian religion are less the enemies of the gods and more a group that does the dirty work for the gods by punishing the wicked, with Pazuzu doing the bookkeeping on who should or should not be punished.
