Gnosticism is an ancient Christian interpretation of biblical teachings stemming from the 2nd AD, which believes that the Judaic God is a flawed being named the Demiurge, while the true God is an immaterial consciousness, often called the Unknown God, above all physical reality. At the beginning of existence, the immaterial God created a lesser emanation of himself named Sophia, who then, in turn, produced a lion-headed serpent named the Demiurge (or Yaldabaoth), which created the inherently flawed physical world and humanity. However, it is believed that the divine immaterial essence has carried over into humanity and that the only way to transcend above the world of pain and impulse is to find this perfect essence within the self (or Gnosis).

The Gnostic views on Jesus are mostly outlined in the "Gospel of Judas", which states that to fulfill the prophecy Jesus told Judas to betray him. This gospel not only includes that revelation, but also that Jesus was a creation of the true God (who was named Set before entering the world) whose mission was to help others unlock the internal essence, but that the other apostles misunderstood his intentions. After his death, a new holy generation would spawn whose souls would have the ability to move on from the physical realm after death.

Other Gnostic beliefs include the Archons, who are hermaphroditic beings with the face of beasts that were created by the Demiurge to help create and rule over the physical realm. The Archons also trap souls within the physical realm when they have not achieved Gnosis and were possible interpretations for the planets.
