Ashtar, whose name is strikingly similar to the Egyptian deity Ishtar, was a commandant of a league of UFOs from a planet named Shanchea that was allegedly psychically contacted by religious leader George Van Tassell in the 1950s. Ashtar expressed his worries about human's instinctive violence and his belief that the new discovery of nuclear weapons was a threat to themselves and the galaxy as a whole to Van Tassell, a sentiment which Tassell adopted himself. Many people since and still do claim to channel Ashtar.
